Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas: the EU will meet all the challenges only by being united and showing solidarity

Press release, 2 May 2016

Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Seimas, had a meeting with Barbara Stamm, President of the Landtag of Bavaria of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the delegation under her leadership. The meeting focused on cooperation between the two countries, security matters, and an exchange of views on the refugee crisis that had shaken Europe.

The Speaker of the Seimas underlined that the European Union was faced with numerous challenges and that in this context it was very important to be united and show solidarity. The refugee migration is one of the major challenges that can only be tackled through collective effort.

The meeting noted the importance of cooperation not only between EU Member States but also between regions. Lithuania and Germany have particularly important strategic relations in intensive trade, politics, culture and science. Germany is the third largest trading partner of Lithuania and one of the biggest investors in the country. The meeting also emphasised close and consistent ties between Lithuania and the Land of Bavaria and the need to further deepen and broaden them.

The Speaker took the opportunity to point out strongly developed sectors of IT and life sciences in Lithuania and to invite investors from the Land of Bavaria to the international conference of Life Sciences Baltics to be held in Lithuania in September 2016.
