Seimas decided to reduce the number of Deputy Speakers of the Seimas

Press release, 15 November 2016

The Seimas adopted amendments to the Statute of the Seimas with a view to reducing the number of Deputy Speakers of the Seimas, waiving their entitlement to official vehicles, and reviewing the number of parliamentary committees. The new provisions of the Statute were adopted by 106 votes in favour with 2 votes against and 17 abstentions.

In accordance with the amendments, the number of Deputy Speakers of the Seimas is reduced from seven to five. They, as well as the Leader of the Opposition, are no longer entitled to use official vehicles with drivers and only the Speaker of the Seimas is entitled to it.

Furthermore, the amendments to the Statute review the number of parliamentary committees in the Seimas. The amendments stipulate that the Committee on Education, Science and Culture is to be replaced with two separate committees, namely, the Committee on Culture and the Committee on Education and Science. The Seimas also decided to abolish the Committee on the Development of Information Society and assign the areas of its activities to the Committee on Economics. The Seimas will have 15 parliamentary committees in total.
