Seimas approved the Programme of the 17th Government

Press release, 13 December 2016

The Seimas adopted the Programme of the 17th Government, which had been drawn up by the coalition of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union and the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party and presented by Saulius Skvernelis, the appointed Prime Minister. The respective resolution of the Seimas was passed by 86 votes in favour, with 3 votes against and 40 abstentions.

Once the Programme was approved by the majority of the Members present at the sitting, the new government received a mandate to act and shall, within three months, draw up and adopt specific measures for the implementation of the programme.

The Government Programme was supported by Members of Political Groups of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, and one of the non-attached Members. Members of the Order and Justice Political Group delivered mixed voting results, with three votes in favour and three abstentions. The Programme did not get support from the Liberal Movement and the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrat Political Groups.

While summarising the debate on the Government Programme, Prime Minister Skvernelis stressed to all the opponents once again that the Programme included very clear and specific objectives, explicitly identified problems and solutions.
