Arvydas Nekrošius, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, expressed his condolences over the death of composer Krzysztof Penderecki

Press release, 31 March 2020

On behalf of the Seimas Delegation to the Assembly of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland and on his own behalf, Arvydas Nekrošius, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of Krzysztof Penderecki, a Polish composer, conductor, and teacher.

The letter of condolences reads that Penderecki’s works have become a universal value and his name represents a modern-day global musical culture. Music composed by Penderecki brought together separate nations and continents and left a permanent imprint on the Lithuanian culture too. Back in November 1998, during the third session of the Polish-Lithuanian parliamentary assembly in Vilnius, we had an honour to listen to the pieces produced by the outstanding composer and performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir under the conduction of Maestro himself. It was a tremendous gift not only to the members of the assembly but also the cultural community.

The Deputy Speaker of the Seimas also extended his wishes of strength to the composer’s family and friends in the hour of bereavement and expressed sympathy to the admirers of his talent. ‘May he rest in peace and may his name be remembered and esteemed,’ says the letter of condolences.
