Earlier today, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso María Dastis Quecedo. The Prime Minister has voiced out the need for furthering the bilateral relations and at the same time strengthening the international security.
“It is good to know that Lithuania and Spain are like-minded as regards the present and the future of the European Union. We see the potential for expanding our bilateral trade, investment and tourism. Spain is a very important tourism market for Lithuania. Our people see your country as one of the most favourite tourism destinations”, said Saulius Skvernelis.
The Prime Minister has thanked the Foreign Minister for Spain’s contribution to Lithuania’s security through the participation in NATO’s Baltic Air-Policing Mission, training of fighter pilots, and the decision to contribute to the NATO Forward Presence in the Baltic States.
The issue of the withdrawal of the UK from the EU (Brexit) has also been discussed in the meeting. According to the Prime Minister, in this situation, Community members have demonstrated unity and consolidation, which shows that the EU must continue to move in the same direction.
Another item on the meeting agenda was the challenges posed by migratory flows in the EU and ways to address them. The interlocutors also have touched upon the situation in Ukraine and the need to strengthen its integration into the European community.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has noted the willingness of the state and the troops themselves to contribute to NATO’s Forward Presence in the Baltic States with a view to ensuring international security and stability, as well as solidarity with other NATO countries.
Furthermore, the Minister has pointed out the need for the EU members to cooperate in fighting both external as well as internal threats to security. He has also agreed with the Prime Minister that Spain should continue strengthening its bilateral relations with Lithuania in the fields of economy and science.
